[UPDATED] Florida Gator’s Urban Meyer (Maybe) Resigns!

Due to health reasons Florida Coach Urban Meyer has decided to step down as head football coach. Over the past 5 years Meter has been extremely successful as the Gator head coach, winning 2 national championships along with a 22 game win streak. His top protegee Time Tebow won the Heisman Trophy and will likely be a 2nd round draft pick come April. This year he led the Gators to the SEC championship game before losing to Alabama. The day after that game he was hospitalized with chest pain and dehydration. While Meyer’s health problems do not appear to life threatening he decided they were serious enough to cause him to quit. Earlier reports about a heart attack and heart valve problem have been deemed false. Notably, Sports Illustrated chronicled Meyer’s severe headaches that apparently are caused by a cyst in his brain. He will forgo nearly $20 million still left in his contract. He will coach in the January 1st Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. No immediate successor has been named, however many names including Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops and former NFL coach Mike Shanahan appear to be in the mix. We wish Urban continued health… and GO GATORS!!

Update: There appears some speculation that Meyer may take a year long leave of absence from the team and then return to coaching after the 2010 season. Other reports speculate that Meyer may begin his leave of absence now, not coach at the Sugar Bowl, but return to the team before the 2010 season. The real question that remains is will the Gators get Bobby Bowden to coach for the one year?
