So the big news in the Daily today is Larry Bacow comes down with the decision that Tufts isn’t going to sanction NQR any more. His reasoning:
“Given that we can no longer manage the run, we cannot allow this ‘tradition’ to continue,” Bacow said in the op-ed. “Even if I did not act now, NQR would end some day. The only question is whether a student has to die first.”
“We cannot allow this to happen, and the Naked Quad Run will not continue,” Bacow continued.
I’m not gonna go over my thoughts on this ad infinitum because I think I’ve made my ideas pretty clear in past posts. But to be brief: I don’t think you can affect a cultural problem (which is what the NQR problem is–the administration thinks Tufts kids “drink too much” or to a “dangerous level”) with legislative change.
By “not sanctioning” NQR, Tufts gets rid of any sort of safety net that there is around the event. Because mark my words, kids will still get shit tanked, get naked, and try to run around the campus. Can’t guarantee when they’ll do it, how many will do it, or anything else, but it’ll happen. And without the precautions the university takes now, someone is going to get hurt. Does Bacow want that on his conscience? I don’t think so.
