This is a live blog of the final of NBC’s The Sing Off. Tufts’ own Beelzebubs are going for the gold here, and we’ve got Deltron guest live-blogging the event. Keep checking back as the show progresses!

8:00: Matt McCormick takes it away for the Bubs in a joint performance from all three groups which seems to be proving the validity of the phrase “the more the merrier”. Impressive vocals from all three of these lead singers is reminding me how hard it is to distinguish between great music but hopefully we’ll see the Bubs make themselves stand out in the next hour.

8:07: Nick Lachey, blah blah blah, you’re chubby.

8:10: Voices of Lee doing Stand By Me, the most clichéd a cappella piece ever with no twist or originality. I thought we were getting holiday music? JACK BLACK in the audience, might we hear some Tribute?

8:12: Ben Folds is a clear VOL supporter, and seems to have no problem with the fact that though the group is vocally talented it’s quite boring. Nicole is impressed, SURPRISE, talking about hearts and rainbows and doesn’t forget to highlight the group’s religious orientation.

8:25: Here comes the vignette for the Bubs and it’s heartwarming: serenading the elderly with their beautiful charm and spot-on harmony. “Where’s the love” from the Black-eyed Peas should be exciting.

Have to say Paul Alvarez’s raspy lead rap is not helping, but the group together totally sounds better. Still, the Bubs are clearly a little nervous tonight, have they cracked under the national pressure? Vocals are good, but where’s the energy? Come on Bubs!

At least Nicole thinks they’re “Bub-tastic”, and Ben Folds has nothing bad to say about them and even mentions the name of their home university. Sean seems pleased too, but I’m pretty happy that the voting took place before tonight’s performance.

8:32: Ok so tonight maybe we can finally figure out if NOTA’s lead singer actually has the amazing voice that he sometimes reveals to us or if this is some funky faux falsetto.

Another cliché song choice, but Pinto (lead) is proving himself for sure and the chords are really stellar. Wow, I have to say, great performance from NOTA… and more celebs in the audience… don’t be distracted by the celebrities, Derek, just kill the MALAYSIAN PRIME MINISTER!!!!!

I’m convinced Nicole doesn’t actually watch or pay attention in any critical manner and just comes up with creative ways to say that the group performing at that point is good.

8:42: Pocket Full of Sunshine by Natasha who makes it a point to compliment the black guy’s voice (PC?) as being sexy. And Natasha was definitely off-pitch in the beginning and hasn’t done much to fix… and now she’s totally fucking it up. Is she purposely trying to bring down VOL? Go Natasha!

8:40: Hmmmm, the Bubs are distracted by Nicole on stage and off, but this does not keep them from backing her up as if they were literally using their fully erect penises to push her. And WOW an amazing piece of music from Nicole and the Bubs, very well done.

How old is Smokey Robinson? The answer is irrelevant, he sounds essentially the same as he does on the original track and the back-ups from NOTA are aesthetically soothing as well. Nothing too exciting about the song itself, but it is very pretty.

9:12: So Nick Lachey wraps up his self-introduced performance with some nonsensical pun about snowstorms on the west coast…

Boys to Men, Yesterday, End of the Road. Beautiful.

9:18: A cappella improvisation ? Are we inventing a new genre now? I’ve never seen such a confused group of singers since my high school choir. They’re trying, but they really look like they all can’t wait to get off the stage, even though some of the stuff he’s doing is pretty cool.

9:28: So, here we go with elimination number one. If the Bubs are out, I’m out.

9:30: SOLID.

9:42: So the two groups break the long-cherished rules of a cappella and do a “duet” with much more than a duo and the accompaniment of Ben Folds on the piano. Why can’t we be friends? Now all I can think about is the morals I learned from West Side Story and all I can picture is the Bubs snapping down the alleyways of their turf singing “when you’re a Bub you’re a Bub all the way…” In the other alley you have NOTA chanting “I like to be in America” with Puerto Rican accents.

9:45: Moment of truth… last minute comments from the judges and then…

… the judges are crying….

… commercials….

9:53: and the winner is… Nota. LAME LAME LAME LAME LAME LAME LAME LAME LAME LAME

IT’S RIGGED….

I’m never doing this again.

The chorus of Where’s The Love was really good, but I agree the rap kinda really sucked

  2. Jumbro

they killed the chorus, that’s for sure. I’m really hoping they perform “Party in the USA” with Taylor Swift right now.

  3. Jumbro

bowing down to nicole… pretty chill. They’re absolutely nailing their sweater changes, by the way.

  4. CFH

Boyz II Men was really fucking boring

  5. Shanda!

Anyone else see that Jackie Chan was in the audience the same night as Jack Black?

    didn’t think so…
