If you haven’t heard already, Hoodie Allen is blowing the fuck up. Like, the kid’s good. He’s putting out a new mixtape “Pep Rally” on Sept. 21 which should be mind boggling. Anyway, DPrep got a chance to talk with the 21-year old Google employee by day, rapper by night, and find some shit out. Check it.
I interviewed Hoodie Allen because I believe in his music. It’s a much needed change of pace from the vast majority of bullshit pop rap that’s coming at us through the mainstream music industry, and people need to hear this music. Hoodie Allen is the kind of rapper you want to listen to when you’re fed up with the “fuck bitches, get money” bullshit that is constantly fed to us through mainstream radio. With dope, laidback beats that you can jam to, creative wordplay, and slick flow, Hoodie is the kind of rapper that you SHOULD be paying attention to, but, like most, you’re probably too busy listening to the new shit they’re feeding you through the radio. If he does not receive huge recognition for his new mixtape, it’s not because it’s not dope, it’s because the music industry simply doesn’t know what it’s doing. So listen to his music, recognize it’s value, and spread it like wildfire-the guy deserves it.
Tell us a little about yourself, how old are you now and what are you doing outside of your music?
Hello world, I am Hoodie Allen and I try to make the music to be the soundtrack to your day. I am 21 with a birthday quickly approaching. Outside of music, I just graduated from college in May and spend my days being an employee of Google.
How did you get started with music, and how did it turn into you being a rapper?
I started writing lyrics when I was really young–it’s just something I enjoyed doing in my spare time. I fell in love with 90′s hip hop -outkast, beastie boys, reflection eternal, wu-tang and I’ve been hooked ever since.
How long have you been writing raps for?
I guess around 9 years now.
What other artists do you really identify with?
I’ve always made music for myself, it’s just my favorite way to act creatively and has always been a very personal process, so I don’t know if I can point to any other artist and say that I identify with them, because it’s never been my motivation. I am however inspired by an incredible amount of different artists.
What artists do you hope to work with?
In a perfect world, Andre 3000 and Kanye West would be my best friends and we could make music all day
Who have you met through your music?
I’ve gotten to meet a number of really cool people–one of my best moments so far was getting to play a show with Clipse, Big Sean, and Mike Posner who were all really great individuals who were ego-free.
What feedback have you seen recently with your new music?
The feedback has been unlike anything I ever anticipated. Pretty surreal, but it just makes me want to work harder to get better every day.
What do you aim for when you create music, and is there any message you try to send?
I would say a recurring theme in my music is individuality. I believe its important for all of us to be ourselves, and do what we love regardless of what the norm, or what others might say. You Are Not A Robot tries to speak to that feeling.
How would you describe your music?
Summertime Jams you can listen to all year round!
What is your touring schedule like right now?
I will be announcing a bunch of dates for the Fall hopefully very soon! I want to play wherever I can.
What do you see yourself doing with your music in the next two years?
Hopefully very amazing things. I want to reach as many people as I can and impove their day by doing something I love (despite how corny that sounds haha)
What can we expect from you both in the near future and a little bit down the road?
An awesome mixtape very soon that you should look out for.
What’s the best way to keep track of what you are doing?
I always make myself very available and will hit everyone back on facebook.com/hoodieallen
I will be launching the mixtape for free download along with a lot of awesome new behind the scenes and fun content at www.timeforthepeprally.com and that is coming real soon!
What influences your music?
Life. Go outside and have fun and let it shine through your music.
