Not So Keen on Robert Green

So, if you haven’t seen it already, here is the goal that led to the Americans tying the Brits in the replay of the Revolutionary War (on a side note, if you didn’t watch the game I am extremely disappointed in your patriotism). Besides the obvious fact that this should have been saved by even a less than stellar 7 year old AYSO goalie, this is how Robert Green will be remembered by the English unless he leads his team to the latest rounds of the World Cup.

Interestingly enough, even when his coach, Fabio Capello, said he “regretted” playing him and was “quite uncertain” as to whether he would start the next game, his teammates stood firmly by his side. English defender Jamie Carragher said, “(Green) will have no problem and will come back ready to play a great game.”

I was pleasantly surprised to see how supportive his teammates were of him, because I always like seeing that in sports. Nonetheless, I was surprised to hear such positive response. I would think such an immense blunder in a game literally millions of fans have been looking forward to for so long would yield much more negative responses from teammates and coaches. All I hear is discussion considering the “magnification” of mistakes that goalies make, as they are the last line of defense.

Still, I can’t help but relate this mistake to a basketball player scoring on his own basket (Luke Walton is Terrible) or a soccer player kicking the ball into his own net (Sandwich Maker) and it definitely reminds me of Martin Brodeur’s own goal in the Stanley Cup playoffs, (Marty) which yielded extremely negative responses from his coaches and teammates, even though he is a legend in his sport.

I guess what I really want to know is how Green will be received when he gets back to England. Earlier, you guys voted that Green will have less than two days before he is burned at the stake by ravaged footie fans.

What do you think life will be like for him back home, and how do you feel about what happened? What if our goalkeeper had made a similar mistake? Sound off in the comments.
